Trauma and Unresolved Issues

A man holds his fist in the air overcoming his trauma

Trauma and unresolved issues from the past can make it feel difficult to move forward in life. A part of us remains stuck.  We might find ourselves feeling broken, anxious, isolated, or alone.  We might also ruminate on things from the past, have flashbacks, experience nightmares, find it difficult to feel safe, or feel shame about who we are as a human.

Healing is possible.  In trauma therapy we learn how to identify internal and external resources for safety...we develop new coping skills...we learn about our body and nervous system's response to trauma and how to use our body's innate abilities to resolve trauma...we process the trauma and aim to make sense of our past...we learn that healing comes through safe connections with safe people...we uncover beliefs about our experiences that keep us stuck...we find power in our stories and learn how to integrate them into who we are today and who we want to be tomorrow.

Although many responses to trauma are similar, we all experience it differently.  Symptoms stem from a wide range of experiences, and may include:

-Abusive Relationships

-Adverse Childhood Experiences

-Physical, verbal, emotional, or sexual abuse

-Neglect

-Isolated traumatic incidents where our safety or the safety of someone else was threatened

-Sexual assault

-Adverse Religious Experiences

-Death of a loved one

-Isolated single events, such as an accident or injury

-Combat trauma

-Anything else that may have threatened your ability to feel safe in your community, in your relationships, or in your body
