Low self-esteem and self-doubt can be caused by patterns of negative, distorted, and unrealistic thinking patterns that reinforce themselves when they are left unchallenged. This can majorly impact your life by causing unhappiness in yourself - and also creating problems in different aspects in your life.
Therapy for low-self esteem and self-doubt involves a process of exploring new and more helpful ways of thinking about ourselves and our strengths and weaknesses. It also includes identifying things that can be done from a behavioral perspective that increase self-esteem. It might mean challenging assumptions by trying new things and learning ways to practice a greater level of self-compassion.
Factors that can contribute to low self-esteem vary by each individual, but it may include some of the following:
- Unhappy childhood or disapproving parents and authority figures
- Neglect
- Academic or career challenges
- Perceived failures
- Unrealistic standards set by society and the media
- Messages received from the people we surround ourselves with
- Past Trauma
- Belief Systems
- Negative, unrealistic, or distorted thinking patterns
- Past trauma or abuse (emotional, physical, or sexual)
- Bullying
- Ongoing stressful life events
- Financial difficulties
- Comparing self to others
- Rejection in the context of dating or other relationships
